Sustainable playground in Den Bosch, Netherlands

When renovating playgrounds, clients and contractors are increasingly working with a future-oriented approach. This project by KSP Kunstgras is a great example of that. The municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch commissioned the transformation of an existing playground. The new playground received new play equipment and a synthetic grass impact-absorbing surface made entirely from recycled materials, including the grass, shock-absorbing underlayer, and edging boards.

Renovating with a sustainable system

Marcel van Mierlo, Neighborhood Manager of the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, started this project by asking what kind of challenging play activities children in the neighborhood needed. By first mapping out the wishes of residents, enjoyable use was already assured. Furthermore, it was important for the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch that the project be built as sustainably as possible, with both the impact-absorbing underlayer and the synthetic grass surface being sustainable. KSP achieved this by installing a 25 cm sand foundation, recycled edging, circular shock pads, recycled infill sand, and LimeGreen ONE-DNA™ grass.

ONE-DNA™ grass is new standard

On play and sports surfaces where natural grass cannot withstand heavy use, synthetic grass has been a perfect solution for years. And more and more project developers and municipalities are now choosing circular synthetic grass from LimeGreen®. Our ONE-DNA™ grass is 100% circular and produced with a much lower carbon footprint than traditional synthetic grass. By making local recycling available, the grass can be high-quality recycled at the end of its life, and new products, including new synthetic grass, can be manufactured.

By also using other sustainable components in projects, such as recycled impact-absorbing materials, edging, and infill sand, we can install fully sustainable systems. Together, we are setting a new standard for building sustainable and future-oriented playgrounds worldwide.

Continuous innovation

Together with the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, we will periodically inspect this impact-absorbing surface in the coming years. This way, we will continue to monitor the condition of this sustainable system and learn for further development. LimeGreen® director Jasper Eppingbroek: “By continuously studying and innovating our products, we are working towards fully circular systems that people can enjoy using for many years. Together, we are shaping the playgrounds of the future!”
