Applications · Roof systems

On a roof, the grass is the last layer.

Roof decks and podiums are specified from the waterproofing up.

Choose a surface that fits the build-up the roof designer has set.

Rooftop terrace with ONE-DNA™ artificial grass
A rooftop terrace with artificial grass. The roof designer sets the build-up underneath.

What matters

What the roof designer will ask.

A roof is a system. The grass has to fit into it, not the other way round.

  1. DrainageWater has to reach the roof outlets without ponding. The surface and the layers under it are designed together.
  2. Load and windWeight, ballast and wind uplift are assessed for the whole roof, not the grass alone.
  3. FireFire requirements for roofs and terraces apply to the complete build-up. Ask for the configuration tested.
Podium garden with ONE-DNA™ artificial grass between residential blocks
A podium garden between residential buildings, laid to suit the roof build-up.

Before you specify

What to agree before anything is laid.

Involve the roof designer before you choose a surface.

Fit with the roof build-upConfirmation from the roof designer that the surface and any underlay suit the waterproofing and drainage.
WeightThe product weight per square meter (or square foot), plus any infill, for the load calculation.
Reaction to fireThe reaction-to-fire test or classification report for the configuration you will install, where the building requires it.
Material testingSGS results, including material properties after 2,500 and 5,000 hours of controlled UV, heat and water.

Roof performance, including external fire performance, is assessed for the complete roof build-up. ONE-DNA™ is the top layer.

FAQ

Questions about roof systems

Working with a roof designer? Talk to us

Can artificial grass be installed on any roof?

Only where the roof designer confirms it fits the waterproofing, drainage, load and fire requirements. The surface is the last layer of a roof system.

Does artificial grass on a roof need a fire classification?

Often, depending on the building and the local building code. ONE-DNA™ results are European classifications under EN 13501-1, not US fire ratings, and apply only to the configuration tested.

How is artificial grass fixed on a roof?

That depends on the roof build-up and wind exposure. The roof designer and installer decide the method, and the waterproofing must stay intact.

Can ONE-DNA™ roof surfaces be recycled?

They are designed for recycling: fiber and backing are joined without a conventional latex or polyurethane coating, and each product follows one material route. Whether a surface is actually recycled depends on removal, collection and the recycling options available at the time. More on end of life →
