Description

When the lawn is the view

In some backyards the lawn is the main thing you see: a long view from the kitchen, a roof deck from the living room, a courtyard framed by planting. ONE-DNA™ Orion 40 is the fuller version of the everyday Orion lawn, with a 40 mm (1.6 in) pile and a higher face weight, for projects where that extra depth suits the space.

It is available in 100% PE and 100% PO. For the 100% PE route, reaction-to-fire test reports cover three configurations, with and without sand infill.

Backyards, roof decks, landscape projects and event areas, where a fuller lawn suits the space. On a roof or in an interior, the fire and drainage requirements of the project decide the build-up.
Available as ONE-DNA™ 100% PE or ONE-DNA™ 100% PO, each with its own technical data. The values on this page are for 100% PE. Tell us about your project and we'll advise which route suits it.
Built with FuseTech™, which bonds the fibers into the backing with heat instead of a latex or polyurethane secondary coating.
Tufted, with the same straight monofilament and curled thatch as Orion 35 at a longer 40 mm pile. The extra length is what gives the higher face weight and the fuller look.
On the 100% PE route, the datasheet advises 10 kg of dried silica sand per square meter (about 2 lb per sq ft), grading 0.5 to 1.0 mm with about 80% rounded grains. Where a project needs the higher fire performance, the tested configuration uses 15 kg per square meter (about 3 lb per sq ft) (see Reaction to fire). For 100% PO, ask us for the infill advice.
650 l/min/m² (about 1,535 in/hr), the same for every ONE-DNA™ product.
ONE-DNA™ Orion 40 has no EN 1177 critical fall height result and is not intended for use under play equipment. On a roof, the roof designer specifies the build-up, drainage and fire requirements.
Reaction to fire depends on the installed build-up, because infill changes the result. For the 100% PE construction, Ghent University test reports cover three configurations: loose laid without infill, and with 10 or 15 kg/m² (about 2 or 3 lb per sq ft) of silica sand. The 100% PO construction has not yet been tested. Ask us for the documentation for your configuration.

Designed for recycling

It starts with the materials

Fiber and backing are joined without a latex or polyurethane coating, within one material route. Whether the product is recycled depends on collection and local processing.

US product testing

Tested with US applications in mind.

Orion 40 has undergone laboratory product analysis by Sports Labs in Ringgold, Georgia, using ASTM and other recognized test methods. The final report (February 2026) documents the tested construction and its results, from physical properties and water infiltration to impact attenuation and critical radiant flux.

  • 204 in/hrWater infiltration, unfilled (ASTM F1551), about 5,180 mm/h. 190 in/hr with 2.0 lb/ft² of 20/40 sand infill.
  • Class 2Average critical radiant flux of 0.37 W/cm² (ASTM E648), in the Class 2 range referenced in NFPA 101, tested with 2.0 lb/ft² of sand infill.
  • 1.59 inMeasured pile height (ASTM D5823), alongside tuft bind (ASTM D1335), binding sites (ASTM D5793) and grab tear (ASTM D5034).

Impact attenuation (Gmax) was measured on two shock pad systems with sand infill, and selected elements were analyzed to EN 71-3. Results apply to the sample and system configuration tested. The EN 71-3 and ASTM E648 analyses were carried out by a subcontract laboratory of Sports Labs. The full report is available on request.

Related knowledge

ONE-DNA™ Orion 40 is used in backyards, roof decks, landscape projects and event areas where a fuller, deeper lawn suits the space. On a roof or indoors, the project’s fire and drainage requirements decide the build-up, so the fire requirement is specified together with the infill quantity.
On the 100% PE route, ONE-DNA™ Orion 40 has a 40 mm (1.6 in) pile and a face weight of 1,850 g/m² (54.6 oz/yd²), against 35 mm (1.4 in) and 1,653 g/m² (48.8 oz/yd²) for Orion 35. Yarn and stitch rate are the same. The difference is depth and fullness.
For the 100% PE construction, Ghent University test reports to the European methods EN ISO 9239-1 and EN ISO 11925-2 give results corresponding to Cfl-s1 loose laid without infill, Cfl-s1 with 10 kg/m² of silica sand and Bfl-s1 with 15 kg/m², under the European standard EN 13501-1. These are European classes, not US fire ratings. Each result applies only to the configuration tested. The 100% PO construction has not yet been tested.
Not for current production. An earlier EPD to EN 15804+A2 (MRPI 1.1.00538.2024, modules A1 to A3) covers ONE-DNA™ Orion 40 in 100% PE made at Hasselt in the Netherlands. It does not cover production in Portugal or the 100% PO route. EPDs for current production are in their final stage.
Yes. ONE-DNA™ Orion 40 is offered in 100% PE and 100% PO, each with its own technical data. The values and fire test results on this page are for 100% PE.
On the 100% PE route the datasheet advises 10 kg of dried silica sand per square meter (about 2 lb per sq ft), graded 0.5 to 1.0 mm with about 80% rounded grains. That quantity was tested with a result corresponding to the European class Cfl-s1; the configuration with 15 kg per square meter (about 3 lb per sq ft) gave Bfl-s1.
