Artificial grass where play comes first.

Climbing, running and ball games on the same afternoon.

Under play equipment the surface also has to soften a fall, so the build-up is chosen for the fall height first, then the look and feel. For parks departments, school districts, play providers and landscape architects.

What matters

Different zones. Different demands.

One playground can need three different build-ups.

  1. Under equipmentImpact attenuation to the European standard EN 1177 for the critical fall height the equipment needs, often with a shock pad underneath.
  2. Open play and gamesRunning and ball games need a stable, consistent surface that drains well.
  3. Paths and edgesTransitions, edging and perimeter anchoring keep the surface secure and level at the edges.

Before you specify

Ask for the result that matches the build-up.

European EN 1177 results belong to a complete build-up: surface, shock pad and any infill.

Critical fall heightThe EN 1177 result for the exact combination of surface, shock pad and infill you plan to install.
Material testingResults of SGS testing for substances of very high concern under EU REACH, PAHs and the migration of elements to the European standard EN 71-3, on the products named in the report.
Water permeabilityThe result for the surface, and the drainage design for the site.
InstallationWho installs the system, and how the shock pad, seams and edges are built.

EN 1177 results for the current 100% PO constructions are not yet available. Ask us about the options for your play equipment.

FAQ

Questions about playgrounds

Specifying a play area? Talk to us

Which ONE-DNA™ products have been tested for impact attenuation?

ONE-DNA™ Play 24 and ONE-DNA™ Vista. Both have been tested extensively to the European standard EN 1177, each on shock pads of different thicknesses, up to a double layer. The reports cover the tested PE versions; if you choose a PO version, we match the test evidence to that build-up. US playgrounds commonly specify ASTM F1292, a different test, so an EN 1177 result does not replace it. Ask us which test data fits the build-up you plan to install.

Do I need a shock pad?

It depends on the fall height of the play equipment. Play 24 and Vista have been tested on shock pads from 25 to 55 mm (about 1 to 2 inches) thick and on a double layer, so the build-up can be matched to the fall height under each piece of equipment. We can help you choose.

Is the material tested for harmful substances?

ONE-DNA™ material has been through SGS testing for substances of very high concern, PAHs and the migration of elements to EN 71-3, on the products named in the report. Ask for the results for the product you specify.

Can a play surface also be used for ball games?

Yes, if the build-up is chosen for both. Pure PT One, for example, is designed as one field for soccer and field hockey.
