A new multi-sport field for Carmel College in Oldenzaal

Twents Carmel College in Oldenzaal, the Netherlands, opened a new multi-sport field designed to encourage movement, recreation and social interaction among students. The project was delivered by the Vario Fields team and provides a dedicated space where students can spend breaks and free periods in an active and engaging way.

Inspired by students

The idea for the multi-sport field emerged following the introduction of a smartphone policy at the school. As students spent less time on their phones during breaks, the demand grew for spaces where they could meet, play sports and spend time together.

Students actively contributed ideas and feedback during the development process, helping shape a facility that reflects how they wanted to use the space. The result is a multifunctional sports area that supports both physical activity and social interaction throughout the school day.

Designed for everyday use

The field features ONE-DNA™ artificial grass and was designed to accommodate a variety of sports and recreational activities. The surface was installed in 100% PE (one polymer), combining practical performance with transparent material composition and documented product information.

The facility provides students with an attractive and accessible space that can be used throughout the year.

More than a sports field

Since opening, the field has become an important gathering place for students.

“I didn’t use my phone much at school anyway,” says Jeffrey, a student. “But now our breaks are much more enjoyable. This field gives us something fun to do together.”

The project demonstrates how thoughtful facility design can encourage participation, movement and interaction while creating additional value for the wider school community.

Building a place for connection

The multi-sport field at Twents Carmel College shows how schools can create environments that support both wellbeing and activity. By listening to students and investing in spaces that bring people together, the school has created a facility that will be used and appreciated every day.

Update, October 2026: this project used ONE-DNA™ in 100% PE. ONE-DNA™ sport surfaces are now supplied in 100% PO; see Technology for the current material routes.
