ONE-DNA™ Play installation in the Scottish Borders

In Innerleithen, on the edge of the Scottish Borders, a long-neglected and frequently waterlogged play area has been transformed into a safe and inviting outdoor space. At the centre of the project is ONE-DNA™ Play, a mono-material artificial grass system developed specifically for play environments.

The installation was carried out by LazyLawn in collaboration with Sportsmaster and demonstrates how material design, safety and usability can come together in a public play environment.

From mud to new possibilities

For years, the playground suffered from drainage issues and a deteriorating surface. A new approach was needed that could withstand local weather conditions while providing a reliable surface for daily use.

ONE-DNA™ Play was selected for its mono-material polyethylene design and suitability for play applications. The result is a surface that integrates naturally into the surrounding environment while supporting regular use throughout the year.

“There was a need for more than just a new surface. It had to be something that made sense – for now and for the future,” said Gavin Brown of LazyLawn Scotland.

Smart installation, built to last

The new surface covers more than 1,300 square metres and has been installed around a variety of play features, including a wooden climbing structure, swings, a slide and a trim trail.

The project required tailored solutions to accommodate height differences, existing ground conditions and changing weather throughout the installation process. A shock-absorbing underlay helps the play area meet relevant safety requirements, while carefully finished edging contributes to a safe and professional result.

A space that lives

Since opening, the playground has become an active part of the local community. Pupils from the nearby primary school use the space daily, while local residents have welcomed the transformation.

Areas that were previously difficult to use have become accessible and inviting spaces where play, movement and social interaction come together. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design and practical surface solutions can help revitalise public play environments.

Update, October 2026: this article reflects the ONE-DNA™ range at the time of publication, based on polyethylene (PE). ONE-DNA™ now also includes a 100% PO route; see Technology for the current material routes.
