ONE-DNA™: understanding product design and material composition

When selecting artificial grass for gardens, playgrounds or landscaping projects, buyers increasingly look beyond appearance and performance alone. Material composition, product documentation and independently verified product information are becoming important factors in the decision-making process.

ONE-DNA™ artificial grass was developed with a mono-material design approach and is supported by a range of independent assessments and technical documentation.

What is a mono-material product?

Many artificial grass products are manufactured using combinations of different polymers, coatings and backing materials.

ONE-DNA™ artificial grass is based primarily on polyethylene (PE), creating a mono-material product structure.

Using a single polymer throughout the product enables a different design approach compared with products that combine multiple material types.

Product documentation and transparency

Independent documentation plays an increasingly important role in product evaluation.

ONE-DNA™ products are supported by a range of assessments and test reports that provide information regarding product composition, performance and material characteristics.

These include:

  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
  • Fire classification testing
  • EN 71-3 testing
  • Leaching assessments
  • Product ageing assessments
  • Material composition evaluations

Together, these documents provide objective information that can support project planning and product selection.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

ONE-DNA™ products are supported by independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

An EPD is a standardised document that provides information about a product based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and follows internationally recognised methodologies.

EPDs enable products performing the same function to be assessed using a common framework and provide transparency regarding environmental information.

Independent testing

ONE-DNA™ products have undergone testing by independent organisations to assess various aspects of product performance and material behaviour.

Examples include:

  • Product Ageing Assessments
  • Accelerated ageing tests provide information about material behaviour following exposure to simulated long-term environmental conditions.
  • Leaching Assessments
  • Independent testing has been carried out in accordance with recognised European standards to evaluate the release of substances under specified test conditions.
  • Fire Classification

Selected ONE-DNA™ products have been tested against applicable fire classification standards for specific applications.

Safety testing

Testing in accordance with EN 71-3 provides information regarding the migration of certain elements and supports applications where child safety considerations are important.

Product Selection Considerations

When evaluating artificial grass products, factors commonly considered include:

  • Appearance
  • Performance
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Product composition
  • Independent test results
  • Available certifications
  • Environmental documentation

The relative importance of these criteria will depend on the specific requirements of each project.

Looking ahead

As demand for product transparency continues to grow, independent testing and documented product information are becoming increasingly important.

ONE-DNA™ artificial grass reflects a focus on mono-material product design, technical documentation and independently verified product information, providing customers with objective data that can support informed decision-making.

Update, October 2026: this article reflects the ONE-DNA™ range at the time of publication, based on polyethylene (PE). ONE-DNA™ now also includes a 100% PO route; see Technology. The EPDs mentioned (MRPI, 2024) cover the product stage (A1 to A3) of products made at the former Hasselt site and do not represent current production in Portugal.
