Nordic Surface, a specialist in playground design and installation, recently completed the renovation of the playground at Björknäs Preschool in Nacka, Stockholm. The project included the installation of ONE-DNA™ artificial grass as part of a broader upgrade of the outdoor play environment.
Creating a more functional play area
The renovation began with the preparation of a new base structure designed to provide effective drainage and long-term surface stability. Shock pads were installed beneath the artificial grass surface to support impact attenuation and play safety.
Prior to the renovation, the playground consisted primarily of gravel, stone and asphalt surfaces. The upgraded design creates a more uniform and accessible play environment for children and staff.
Installation of ONE-DNA™
The selected surface was ONE-DNA™ artificial grass, which was installed across the renovated play area. The product was chosen as part of the overall playground design and integrated into the school’s requirements for functionality, safety and appearance.
ONE-DNA™ was made in 100% PE (one polymer). Its Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), independently verified via MRPI in 2024 for the product stage (A1 to A3) of the former Hasselt production, provided transparent environmental information based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology.
Meeting project requirements
Educational facilities increasingly evaluate products based on performance, safety, durability and available product documentation. For this project, Nordic Surface worked closely with stakeholders to deliver a solution that met the requirements of the preschool and local municipality.
The completed playground combines:
- Impact-attenuating shock pads
- Improved drainage performance
- Modern playground aesthetics
- Durable artificial grass surfaces
- Positive Community Response
The completed renovation has been positively received by both the preschool administration and representatives of Nacka Municipality. The renewed playground provides an attractive outdoor environment where children can play, learn and interact throughout the year.
Looking ahead
The Björknäs Preschool project demonstrates how careful planning, quality installation and collaboration between municipalities, educational institutions and specialist contractors can contribute to modern playground environments that prioritize safety, usability and long-term performance.
Update, October 2026: this article reflects the ONE-DNA™ range at the time of publication, based on polyethylene (PE). ONE-DNA™ now also includes a 100% PO route; see Technology. The EPDs mentioned (MRPI, 2024) cover the product stage (A1 to A3) of products made at the former Hasselt site and do not represent current production in Portugal.
