Environmental performance is becoming an increasingly important consideration in the specification of artificial grass. Municipalities, architects, contractors and project owners are seeking reliable information that helps them better understand the characteristics of the products they select.
As a result, the focus is shifting from marketing claims towards documented and independently verified information.
Understanding environmental information
Artificial grass systems are complex products that require raw materials, manufacturing processes, transportation and installation.
To evaluate environmental performance consistently, recognized assessment methodologies have been developed. These methodologies help quantify environmental information using transparent and standardized calculation methods.
Two of the most widely used tools are:
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
- Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
Together, these provide a structured approach for evaluating environmental data throughout the lifecycle of a product.
Why documentation matters
Environmental information is most valuable when it is supported by recognized methodologies and independently verified data.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) provides a standardized way of presenting environmental information, enabling project owners and specifiers to compare products using a common framework.
Rather than relying solely on general claims, EPDs provide documented information that can support procurement and specification decisions.
Material composition plays a role
Material composition is one of many factors that can influence product design and environmental performance.
ONE-DNA™ was developed around a 100% PE (one polymer) design and supported by transparent material documentation. This approach reflects a broader industry trend towards increased transparency regarding material composition and product information.
By providing clear documentation, project owners and stakeholders are better equipped to evaluate products based on objective information.
Environmental Product Declarations and ONE-DNA™
At the time, ONE-DNA™ products were supported by Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (2024 MRPI EPDs, A1 to A3, former Hasselt production).
These documents provide independently verified information relating to the product and help ensure environmental data is presented using recognized methodologies.
For municipalities, architects and consultants, access to documented information can support informed decision-making throughout the specification process.
Looking ahead
As regulations, procurement requirements and reporting expectations continue to evolve, environmental documentation is becoming increasingly important within the artificial grass sector.
The direction is clear: environmental performance should be supported by transparent, comparable and independently verified information.
For ONE-DNA™, this means continuing to focus on material transparency, product documentation and recognized assessment methodologies that help stakeholders make informed choices based on facts and data.
Update, October 2026: this article reflects the ONE-DNA™ range at the time of publication, based on polyethylene (PE). ONE-DNA™ now also includes a 100% PO route; see Technology. The EPDs mentioned (MRPI, 2024) cover the product stage (A1 to A3) of products made at the former Hasselt site and do not represent current production in Portugal.
