Digital Product Passports: the future of product transparency

Access to reliable product information is becoming increasingly important across many industries. Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are expected to play an important role in this development by making product information more accessible, transparent and traceable throughout a product’s lifecycle.

What is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport is a structured digital record that provides information about a product throughout its lifecycle. Depending on the product category and applicable regulations, a DPP may include information on:

  • Material origin
  • Material composition
  • Product documentation
  • Certifications and compliance information
  • Environmental data
  • Product traceability

The aim is to make relevant product information easier to access and verify.

Why Digital Product Passports matter

Across Europe, regulatory developments are increasing the importance of transparency and traceability. Digital Product Passports are expected to become a practical tool for manufacturers, project owners and public authorities, because they keep product information accessible throughout the service life of a product.

What ONE-DNA™ documents today

For ONE-DNA™ products, the following information is documented and available on request:

  • Material composition per material route
  • Test reports, each stating the product and build-up it covers
  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs to EN 15804+A2) for the products they cover
  • Product data sheets and installation guidance

This is the kind of information a Digital Product Passport is designed to carry. Which digital format will be used for it, and when, depends on how the requirements develop.

Looking ahead

The growing adoption of Digital Product Passports reflects a broader trend toward transparency, traceability and accessible product information. Structured, verifiable documentation makes it easier for specifiers and buyers to compare products on the same basis.

Update, November 2026: this article has been revised. It now describes only the product information that is documented for ONE-DNA™ today.
