Fire safety is an important consideration when selecting materials for public spaces, commercial buildings, exhibitions, events and indoor environments. Whether a project is a temporary installation or a permanent public space, materials often have to meet defined fire performance requirements.
In 2024, ONE-DNA™ artificial grass was independently tested at Ghent University and classified Cfl-s1 to EN 13501-1 in the tested build-up.
What is Cfl-s1?
Cfl-s1 is a European reaction-to-fire class for floor coverings under EN 13501-1.
The class reflects how a floor covering behaves when exposed to fire, including:
- Flame spread
- Smoke production
For architects, specifiers and project owners, a test result for the build-up they plan to use provides a documented basis for assessing suitability.
Why fire testing matters
Fire requirements are particularly relevant in:
- Public buildings
- Offices
- Educational facilities
- Exhibition halls
- Retail environments
- Event venues
In many situations, flooring materials must demonstrate documented fire performance before they can be approved for use. Artificial grass is no exception: testing under controlled conditions is how performance is verified against the relevant requirements.
The tested build-up
A fire class belongs to the build-up that was tested, not to a product in general. Whether infill, an underlay or a different substrate is used can change the result.
The tested ONE-DNA™ product uses a construction without a conventional latex or polyurethane coating. In the tested build-up, this offered:
- Documented fire performance in the tested build-up
- A natural appearance
- Reduced material complexity
Suitable for a range of applications
Artificial grass with a matching, documented floor fire classification can be considered for environments including:
- Trade fairs and exhibitions
- Event venues
- Commercial interiors
- Educational facilities
- Public buildings
- Landscaping projects
Roofs are assessed separately (BROOF), not with the floor classes Bfl or Cfl.
Need a different class?
In 2024, selected ONE-DNA™ products were also classified Bfl-s1 to EN 13501-1 in the tested build-up, which may suit projects with stricter requirements.
Project designers and specifiers can select the appropriate solution for their regulatory and technical requirements, checking that the build-up matches the test.
Independently tested
The results are based on independent testing at Ghent University in accordance with EN ISO 9239-1 and EN ISO 11925-2. Whether a project complies depends on the build-up installed and the regulations that apply.
Update, October 2026: this article describes 2024 test results for earlier ONE-DNA™ 100% PE constructions. They are test reports, not certificates, and apply only to the build-up tested. See Technology for the current material routes.
