Since 2006, we have been active in the artificial grass market. During that time, we have seen the many benefits artificial grass can offer in landscaping, play, and recreational applications. We have also seen increasing attention being given to topics such as material use, product lifecycles, and end-of-life management.
These developments led us to explore a simple question: Could artificial grass be designed differently?
Exploring a single-polymer approach
Traditional artificial grass products often consist of multiple materials, each fulfilling a specific function within the system.
With ONE-DNA™, we investigated whether it would be possible to develop an artificial grass product based on a single polymer: polyethylene (PE). The objective was to simplify the material composition of the product while maintaining the performance characteristics required for landscaping and play applications.
The result is an artificial grass system in which both the fibre and backing are manufactured from the same polymer.
Product design and material recovery
The way a product is designed can influence the possibilities for processing materials at the end of its service life.
By reducing material complexity, ONE-DNA™ aims to support future material recovery and recycling processes. The approach is based on the principle that simpler material streams may create additional opportunities for reuse within suitable polyethylene recycling applications.
Independent assessment
To better understand the material composition and recyclability characteristics of ONE-DNA™, we commissioned SGS Intron to conduct an independent assessment.
The evaluation examined the material composition of the product and the behaviour of both fibre and backing materials when reprocessed into new polyethylene applications.
The findings provided valuable insights into the potential for material recovery and reuse within relevant recycling streams.
Continuous development
For us, circularity extends beyond product design alone. Collection systems, logistics, processing technologies, and collaboration throughout the value chain all play an important role in supporting material recovery.
ONE-DNA™ represents our contribution to this ongoing development. By continuing to work with partners across the supply chain, we aim to further explore practical solutions that support responsible material management throughout the lifecycle of artificial grass products.
Update, October 2026: this article describes the original ONE-DNA™ concept from 2022, based on polyethylene (PE). ONE-DNA™ now also includes a 100% PO route. See Technology for the current material routes.
