Municipality of Purmerend selects ONE-DNA™ for playground renovation

When playgrounds reach the end of their service life, municipalities are often faced with balancing safety, functionality, maintenance requirements and material selection.

In the municipality of Purmerend, a local playground was recently renovated by partner KSP Kunstgras using a combination of new surface materials and existing playground infrastructure.

Renovating a community playground

The project was developed to replace an ageing impact-absorbing surface while maintaining a safe and attractive play environment for local residents.

According to the municipality, the selection process focused on durability, maintenance requirements and the suitability of materials for long-term public use.

KSP Kunstgras supplied and installed the new surface system, consisting of:

  • Subbase
  • Foam shock pad elements
  • Recycled plastic edging components
  • ONE-DNA™ artificial grass

Together, these elements form the impact-absorbing surface used within the playground.

Material selection

The municipality considered several options before selecting the final system.

Niels Konijn, Project Manager for the Municipality of Purmerend, explained:

Where possible, we prefer to incorporate natural materials into public spaces. However, this location experiences intensive daily use and required a surface solution that could perform under those conditions. Material composition and future processing options were among the aspects considered during the selection process.

Artificial grass in public spaces

Artificial grass is frequently used in playgrounds and recreational areas where intensive use can make natural grass difficult to maintain. For this project, the municipality selected ONE-DNA™ artificial grass, a product made in 100% PE (one polymer).

The product was chosen as part of the overall playground redevelopment programme and integrated into the impact-absorbing surface system supplied by KSP Kunstgras.

Collaboration on public space projects

Projects such as this demonstrate how municipalities, contractors and suppliers work together to develop practical outdoor environments that meet the needs of local communities.

By carefully evaluating safety requirements, maintenance considerations and material characteristics, public authorities can make informed decisions when renovating playgrounds and recreational facilities.

The renovated playground in Purmerend now provides a renewed space for play, recreation and community use for years to come.
