One of the most important distinctions is whether a product is based on a mono-material or multi-material design.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding these differences can help municipalities, architects, installers and project developers make more informed decisions when evaluating product composition and future processing options.<\/p>\n<h4>Mono-material artificial grass<\/h4>\n<p>A mono-material product is manufactured primarily from a single polymer. ONE-DNA\u2122 artificial grass was made in 100% PE (one polymer).<\/p>\n<p>Using a single polymer throughout the product can simplify material identification and processing compared with products that combine multiple polymer types.<\/p>\n<h4>Multi-material artificial grass<\/h4>\n<p>Many conventional artificial grass systems are manufactured using combinations of materials such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Polyethylene (PE)<\/li>\n<li>Polypropylene (PP)<\/li>\n<li>Latex or Polyurethane (PU)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These materials may be used within fibers, backing layers, reinforcement structures or coatings.<\/p>\n<p>Because different materials are combined within a single product, additional processing steps may be required when materials are handled after use.<\/p>\n<h4>Material properties and processing<\/h4>\n<p>Different polymers possess different physical characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>One example is melting temperature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polyethylene (PE)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Polyethylene has a relatively consistent processing range, which allows the material to behave predictably during manufacturing and material processing operations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mixed Polymer Systems<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When different polymers are present within a product structure, each material may require different processing conditions. As a result, additional sorting, separation or processing steps may be necessary depending on the intended recovery route.<\/p>\n<h4>Product transparency<\/h4>\n<p>Understanding material composition is becoming increasingly important for project owners, municipalities and specifiers.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, ONE-DNA\u2122 was supported by independent product assessment and documentation, through testing and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), verified via MRPI in 2024 for the product stage (A1 to A3) of the former Hasselt production.<\/p>\n<p>An EPD provides standardized information on the environmental profile of a product for the life cycle stages it declares, and allows products performing the same function to be assessed using a common methodology.<\/p>\n<h4>Independent testing<\/h4>\n<p>ONE-DNA\u2122 products have been subjected to a range of independent assessments, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) development<\/li>\n<li>Material composition evaluations<\/li>\n<li>Leaching assessments<\/li>\n<li>EN 71-3 testing<\/li>\n<li>Product aging assessments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These evaluations provide documented information regarding product characteristics and performance.<\/p>\n<h4>Looking ahead<\/h4>\n<p>As material efficiency and product transparency continue to gain importance across multiple industries, mono-material design approaches are receiving increased attention.<\/p>\n<p>ONE-DNA\u2122 represented an approach to 100% PE (one polymer) artificial grass design, focusing on material consistency, documented product information and Design for Recycling principles.<\/p>\n<p><em>Update, October 2026: this article reflects the ONE-DNA\u2122 range at the time of publication, based on polyethylene (PE). ONE-DNA\u2122 now also includes a 100% PO route; see <a href=\"https:\/\/one-dna.com\/us\/technology\/\">Technology<\/a>.
